Immigration to Australia- Timeline
Lesson 2
In 1901 Australia became a Federation. Before the Federation of Australia, there were six colonies, and each colony had different laws and leaders. However, in 1901 there was a vote to join the colonies, the majority voted yes and Australia became The Commonwealth of Australia. The colonies were now states. The states still had some powers but the Federal government developed other policies and laws that were for the whole of Australia. This included migration policies. The two territories, the Northern Territory (NT) and Australia Capital Territory (ACT) joined the agreement later.
